Falls In Residential and Nursing Home Care Settings

Elderly people are frequently more at risk of falling especially if they have a serious medical condition. According to National Institute of Health and Care Research, 2022, “people in Care homes are 3 times more likely to fall than those living at home”. Poor lighting, slippery surfaces, physical weakness after sickness or surgery, conditions such as dementia, and being in unfamiliar surroundings are all factors that increase the risk of falls.

What to do when a resident falls?

    • Medical personnel should perform a full head-to-toe evaluation for any soft tissue or bone injuries, including any potential fractures, head or spinal injuries.
    • An ABCDE (airway, breathing, circulation, Disability, Exposure) check is necessary
    • Speak with the patient or someone who witnessed the fall if you were not present when the resident fell.
    • If the resident is not hurt or injured and does not appear ill or more confused, then ask your colleague to help to get the resident into a wheelchair/bed using the correct appropriate handling techniques or equipment for the patient.
    • Help the resident to a private, comfortable area if they are able to stand up on their own, then continue your evaluations/observations.
    • It is advised to continue observing the resident for the next 24hrs or as per the care facility or hospital protocols.
    • Complete an incident form, post-fall assessment form and follow incident reporting procedures.
    • If there is any changes in the patient’s condition or any concerns, please call the GP or 999.

If the resident is confused, in pain, or shows signs of weakness, shaking or dizziness, call 999

    • Stay with the patients until an ambulance arrives
    • Do not move the patient or raise their head in case they may have a spinal injury
    • Keep the patient warm and provide reassurance

Please note: The above is a guide only however, it is important to follow post-fall procedures in accordance to the organisation’s protocols
